Christian Terms
In my walk with the Lord, I found I needed to learn "Christianese" (what I term that others were
saying) to understand and have a conversation with other Christian. The following are terms I have
discovered are the most discussed, and along with the Lord's current revelation of understanding of
these terms, may you be blest with this understanding.
Circumcision - In old testament times, it was the sign of covenant between Abraham and God, Gen 17
Romans 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while
he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in
order that righteousness might be credited to them.

Today, it's meaning has changed from the cutting of foreskin, to the cutting of the heart,
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel,
and with the house of Judah:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring
them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them,
saith the LORD:
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD,
I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts;
and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD:
for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD:
for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Jer 31:31-34
In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature,
not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ
,
Col 2:11
Baptism - (Water) - Old testament foundation, when God flooded the earth cleansing it of sin saving
only Noah and his family to re-populate the earth; also when the family of Israel left Egypt during the
Exodus and crossed through the parted Red Sea - both significant of water baptism.
1 Peter 3:18-21,
1 Cor 10:1-2
New Testament foundation, the significant acceptance of repentance of forgiveness of sins - whether
submersion or sprinkled - as an outward sign, for others to see, that you've
committed your life to following
Jesus' teachings.
And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance
for the forgiveness of sins
. Mark 1:4
- (Fire/Holy Spirit) - Old and New Testament foundations of God's empowering. Moses, David, the
Book of Judges, Elisha, Elijah, the Books of the Prophets, the Gospels, the Book of Acts, Paul's writings,
Peter's writings, and John's writings are all examples. It is understood as God's empowering a person for
service more so in the New Testament. John announced, "
I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit
.", Mark 1:8 & Acts 2:1-11 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them
this command: "
Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard
me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy
Spirit
." Acts 1:4-5
There is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when you were called -- one Lord,
one faith,
one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Eph 4:4-6
Saved - The 'Soul' condition for the acceptance and believing in Jesus Christ as your Savior for repentance
of forgivenenss of sin. "
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes
in him shall not perish but have eternal life
." John 3:16, You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the
demons believe
that--and shudder. James 2:19 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God
-- John 1:12 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord,"
and
believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that
you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved
. Romans 10:9-10
Sanctified - Set apart, the act of being made Holy; not just wanting to your 'Jesus thing' YOUR way! 1 Pet
2:9-10 tell us, '
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that
you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were
not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received
mercy
.' We are those who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the
sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be
yours in abundance
. Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the
grace
to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires
you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is
written
: "Be holy, because I am holy." 1 Pet 1:13-16 'Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you
are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you
.' 1 Pet 4:12, God is in the process of
sanctifying you!
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will
.
Romans 12:2 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to
godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing
measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ
. 2 Pet 1:5-8
Justified - As a saintly brother puts it, 'Just As If I', God's pronouncement of His grace on us. When we've
given our hearts soulfully to Him, having asked for the blood of Jesus to cover our sinly state, God does this:
'
as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.' Psalms 103:12 God
declares us innocent and guiltless; absolved and acquited. He then removes our sinful garments and gives us
our 'washed in the Blood of Jesus' garments, and declares, "
Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no
more
.", just as if (I)/we had never done anything wrong in the first place. 'Consequently, just as the result of
one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also
the result of one act of righteousness was justification
that brings life for all men
.' Romans 5:18 An act such as this can only be preformed by a righteous God. 'We
are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus
.' Romans 3:24
Holy Spirit - Third person of the 'Trinity', Descending Dove, Fire, Oil, Wind, and Water are all attributes
of Him. '
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day
on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power
.' 1 Sam 15:13 'As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up
out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw
the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and lighting on him.' Matt 3:16 'They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on
each of them. All of them were
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit
enabled them
.' Acts 2:3-4 He's our promise sealed by God, 'He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and
put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come
.' 2 Cor 1:22 He is the annointing of God
for empowerment of service, gifts, blessings, and works.
Trinity - While there is no specific listing in the Bible for the word 'Trinity', evidence abounds. Gen 1:1-3 is
the very first implication of the Trinity, in the Word.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was
hovering over the waters. And God
said .. (spoke), and again in John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word
(
what was spoken), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made
. In Matthew 28:19
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the
Holy Spirit, they are all spelled out. I guess the best humanly description is as we are comprised of
Body, Mind, and Soul all in one, so it is with God, for we were
created in His image and likeness.
Redeem, Redeemer, Redemption - The act of buying back, paying the price, and the act of being
delivered or rescued. With the 'Fall of Man' we lost our inheritance with God. Jesus redeemed us and with
His blood, bought us back from Satan's dominion, and restored us to heaven's dominion, giving us our
inheritance back - similiar to the 'Prodical Son' in
Luke 15:11-32 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick!
Bring the best robe and put it on him.
Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened
calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost
and is found
."
Sacrafice - In Old Testament times, the giving of an animals life, it's blood poured out on the alter of worship,
subtitutively cleansing us of our sin or wrongdoing. Jesus was the guiltless 'lamb' given in our place for us, His
blood was poured out on the cross (alter of forgiveness), permanently cleansing our sins - past, present, and
future; for all of eternity. Our lives surrendered, and act of praise and worship to Him.
Sin - One of the widest used description is 'Missing the Mark'. It is a transgression of divine law, an act of a
willful violation of some religious or moral principle, or a simple choice to live a life apart from God's
teachings, simply put, it is our willfulness against God. The 'Fall of Man' was the willful act of disobedience
to the righteous act of God, '
Not to eat of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the Garden, the tree of Wisdom
and Knowledge
.' 'Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this
way death came to all men, because all sinned
-- (for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, missed
the mark) -
for before the law was given, sin was in the world.' 'Consequently, the result of one trespass was
condemnation for all men
.' Romans 5:12 & 18
Born Again - A mark in time when one surrenders his will to that of his Lord Savior Jesus. Jesus declared,
"I
tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." "How can a man be born
when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be
born!" Jesus answered, "
I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water
and the Spirit.
Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." John 3:3-6 Therefore, if anyone
is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Cor 5:17
Grace - The manifestation of favor, especially by a superior (God), God's bestowment of mercy; clemency;
and pardon carried out by Jesus' act of unselfish giving of His life and redemption by dying on the cross. The
freely given, unmerited favor and love of God to a lost soul. '
We are justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that came by Christ Jesus
.' Romans 3:24 'And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that
in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work
.' 2 Cor 9:8 'But because
of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in
transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved
.' Eph 2:4-5
Mercy - The compassionate, kindly forbearance, and love shown by God toward us, as an offender and
enemy, under His power and wrath. '
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still
sinners, Christ died for us
.' Romans 5:8 'It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his
compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.' Lam 3:22-23
"Religion, like the Law
can't save you,
but a relationship with
Jesus Christ can!"
